Photos they’ll laugh at someday. Photos you’ll cry over.
When your baby is born, everyone tells you how fast they’ll grow.
And you nod, of course.
But then it actually happens.
One day you’re coaxing them to crawl.
The next, they’ve dragged half your kitchen to build a “rocket” under the dining table.
And you realise—there’s no going back.
No pause button.
No “Let me relive that Tuesday when she said ‘Amm-brella’ for the first time.”
This phase…
the not-quite-a-baby, not-yet-a-big-kid phase…
it’s wild.
It’s hilarious.
It’s over before you know it.
That’s why I love photographing children at this stage.
Because they’re constantly becoming.
Right in front of your eyes.
“Is this really the right age for photos?”
You know that feeling when you open your phone to take a quick picture…
and they immediately look away?
Or shove a toy in their mouth?
Or make that weird face they suddenly think is hilarious?
Yep.
That’s the stage.
That deliciously chaotic, wildly unpredictable stage.
They’re out of your arms, into everything,
and somehow always sticky.
And just when you think you’ve figured out this version of them—
they change again.
So sometimes people ask me,
“Is this really the best age for photos? Should we wait till they’re more… still?”
And honestly? I get it.
Because they’re busy.
Always in motion.
Sometimes grumpy.
Almost never “camera ready.”
But maybe that’s exactly why it matters
Because this age?
It’s full of them.
The real them.
Not posing. Not performing.
Just being—messy, silly, serious, whatever that day brings.
One day it’s stickers.
Next week it’s dinosaurs.
Then you blink, and suddenly their voice sounds different.
Their cheeks are less round.
They don’t say “strawbabby” anymore.
You won’t realise when the last time happens.
You never do.
Don’t wait for perfect. Wait for real.
So I gently suggest—take the photos.
Not the perfect ones.
The honest ones.
The ones where they’re sitting on the floor, mid-giggle.
Or flopped in your lap with jam on their chin.
Or standing proudly with one shoe on the wrong foot.
You’re not trying to freeze them.
You’re trying to see them.
As they are—right now.
Before the next leap.
Before that weird obsession with spoons is replaced by trucks, or dinosaurs, or whatever comes next.
Sometimes parents ask me,
“Should we wait until they’re more cooperative?”
And I always smile.
Because this age?
This unpredictable, sticky-fingered, fiercely original age?
It won’t last.
And when it’s gone, it’s really gone.
You think you’ll remember.
How they hummed to themselves while building block towers.
How they needed to hold your finger for just one more minute before letting go.
How they’d come running with a book, saying “Again?” after the fifth read.
But memory gets busy.
It lets go of things to make room for new ones.
The photos won’t.
The photos will remember.
One day, you’ll be so glad you did
Because years from now,
those are the photos that will make you stop.
Smile.
And feel the whole day come rushing back.
And years from now, when their laugh sounds different,
when they roll their eyes instead of jumping into your lap—
you’ll hold a photo and think,
“That was her.
That was his laugh.
That was us—right then.”
So no, the photos won’t always be perfect.
But the moment was.
And sometimes, that’s all you need to keep.
And whenever you’re ready
I’ll be here.
With an open space, a patient heart, and a camera that knows how to wait.
Let’s make something you’ll hold onto,
long after they’ve outgrown your lap.
